DOING AGRICULTURE AS A BUSINESS.

For decades, agriculture across Africa has been largely perceived as a subsistence activity. Something done to survive rather than to build wealth. But that narrative is rapidly changing. Today, agriculture is no longer just about food production; it is a powerful engine for economic growth, innovation, job creation, and industrial transformation. The question is no longer whether agriculture can be profitable, the question is how well it can be structured and scaled as a business.

At the forefront of this transformation is EDY’S MUSHROOM COOPERATIVE CAMEROON (EMCC) SCOOPS, a growing agribusiness initiative redefining what it means to farm with purpose, strategy, and vision.

From Humble Beginnings to Scalable Vision

In July 2024, EMCC took its first bold step in Bamenda with an investment of over 2 million FCFA, establishing a modest mushroom farm producing approximately 40 kilograms of fresh mushrooms per month. While the output was small, the vision was not. It was a proof of concept, a demonstration that structured mushroom farming, even at a small scale, could generate consistent yield and open doors to value-added opportunities.

What began as a cooperative of just five shareholders has now grown into a vibrant ecosystem of over eleven shareholders, supported by committed marketers and strategic partners. This growth is not accidental, it is the result of a deliberate shift from farming as an activity to farming as a business.

The Next Big Leap: Industrial Mushroom Production

Building on this foundation, EMCC SCOOPS is preparing for a major expansion in the Littoral Region of Cameroon. With a planned investment of over 20 million FCFA, the cooperative aims to establish a modern farm setup capable of producing 11 tons of fresh oyster mushrooms monthly.

This is not just an increase in scale, it is a transformation approach. By adopting a business-oriented model, EMCC is positioning itself to meet growing market demand, ensure consistency in supply, and compete within both local and regional markets.

Beyond Fresh Mushrooms: Value Addition as a Strategy

One of the defining features of agriculture as a business is value addition. EMCC SCOOPS understands that profitability lies not only in production but also in transformation.

The cooperative is developing a range of innovative by-products, including:

EMCC Mushroom Powder a nutritious food supplement rich in health benefits
EMCC Mushroom Coffee blending wellness with everyday consumption
EMCC Mushroom White Wine introducing a unique, locally crafted beverage
EMCC Soap promoting natural skincare solutions

By diversifying its product line, EMCC is reducing waste, maximizing revenue streams, and creating a brand that extends beyond raw agricultural produce.

The broader objective of EMCC SCOOPS goes beyond profit. It is anchored on three key pillars:

  • Promoting healthy feeding through natural and nutritious products,
  • Creating employment opportunities across farming, processing, marketing, and distribution
  • Boosting the Cameroonian economy by encouraging local production and reducing dependency on imports

This model reflects a new generation of agribusinesses enterprises that are not only economically viable but also socially impactful.

An Open Invitation to Build Together.

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of EMCC SCOOPS is its inclusive approach. The cooperative is opening its doors to Africans across the continent and diaspora who are willing to invest, collaborate, and grow this vision together.

Agriculture, when treated as a business, thrives on partnership, innovation, and shared ownership. EMCC SCOOPS is not just building a farm, it is building a movement.

“Doing agriculture as a business” is not a slogan, it is a mindset. It requires planning, investment, value addition, and market orientation. EMCC SCOOPS exemplifies how this approach can turn a small-scale initiative into a scalable, impactful enterprise.

As Cameroon and Africa at large look toward sustainable economic futures, agribusiness stands out as one of the most promising pathways. And with initiatives like EMCC SCOOPS leading the way, the future of agriculture is not just green, it is profitable, innovative, and inclusive. Where its motto “Purely Grown, Rooted in Nature, and Cultivating Trust.”
